Three New (or recent) Finds!

An update containing specimens from three recent finds.  1) An exciting new find of Chinese autunite-- they look just as good as the ones from Washington or France.  I tried to offer the best value in terms of bang for buck-- I have seen cheaper ones that are designating, and much better ones that were commanding prices 2-3 times what a good one from Washington would cost.  For something that isn't even a classic, that just seemed silly.  These seemed to be a good middle road.   2) Specimens from an incredible pocket of pyrite from Huanzala, recovered towards the end of last year.  Not exactly a new find in the strictest definition, but these are certainly exceptional by the standard of anything that has come out in the last 15 years-- the luster is just crazy on some of these.  3) Scheelite dusted with stolzite on quartz from Mundo Nuevo.  I purchased these on my last trip to Peru, and finally got around to posting them.  They come from a small find made in late 2014-- I high graded a couple small stashes in Peru, and in my opinion these have much better aesthetics and sharpness than what I've seen elsewhere.

PAS01 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
21.2x 11.5x 11.0 cm
$2600

A large cabinet specimen of pyrite, from a spectacular pocket hit towards the end of last year.  The pieces from this pocket has a spectacular mirror luster, and were fairly clean-- this one does have a couple spots of damage, but for the size, it's in VERY good condition.

I would feel a bit sleazy calling this a "new find" as the mine has been producing for decades, but the quality that this pocket produced has not been recovered in years.  Part of that is due to the mine being privatized-- whereas blasting used to be in intervals of 5 meters, technological advances mean that the blasts now destroy up to 15 meters at the time.  Also, the new owners have been VERY strict about allowing specimens out.

This was one piece from a medium sized lot that I purchased.  As the person who sold them to me put it-- the group this belonged to was selected from "many tons" of specimens, and judging from what I usually see, I am inclined to believe him.  It is never difficult to buy pyrite in Peru, but finding good pieces is another story entirely-- there are usually only a couple per trip, though on that last trip, I got lucky.

Given the ultra-high luster, large size, and hundreds of  crystal faces, this is hard to photograph....

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
13.0x 9.0x 8.7 cm
$1850

A large cabinet specimen of pyrite, from a spectacular pocket hit towards the end of last year.  The pieces from this pocket has a spectacular mirror luster, and were fairly clean-- this one does have a couple spots of minor damage, but for the size, it's in EXCELLENT condition.  The luster is so bright, you can even read the reflection of a label off the crystal face.

I took extra pictures of this one.  Given the ultra-high luster, large size, and hundreds of  crystal faces, this is hard to photograph, so it took more shots to properly convey the quality.

PAS05 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
8.0x 4.5x 6.0 cm
$650

An excellent and razor sharp example of octahedrap pyrite from Huanzala.  Looking very closely, I can see only two small nicks, neither on a main crystal.  The overall arrangement, sharpness and balance of this piece are truly exceptional.

The locals call octahedral crystals these "triangulos" ("cocos" are the dodecahedrons, "chispas" are the groups of small crystals you see in gift shops, and "cubos" are self explanatory.) This was not from the new pocket, but rather held back from earlier finds-- the octahedral crystals are extremely rare.

PAS06 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
10.0x 5.3x 4.4 cm
$495

Of the smaller cubic specimens in the lot, this is my favorite.  This piece has an exceptional mirror luster, and the crystals are very sharp.  There is also a light sprinkling of black sphalerite that adds a nice bit of contrast.  The main crystal is perfect, though there are nicks on two others (most notably on the upper right.)  Either way, the balance, luster arrangement and overall appearance put this piece in a league above all the tons of pyrite you see at shows.

I do feel that this one is considerably better in person-- its hard to appreciate the three-dimensionality in the picture, then again, all of these have proven difficult to properly capture.

PAS07 Quartz, Stolzite on Scheelite
Mundo Nuevo Mine, Mundo Nuevo, Sanchez Carrion Prov., La Libertad Dept., Peru
10.0x 6.0x 7.6 cm
$0

I had seen a small group of these at Tucson 2015, and was hoping to get more on my previous trip.  Although the find was small,  I was able to come back with a group of pretty good pieces.  While these are never particularly "sharp", those I saw in Tucson looked especially melted-- the pieces I came back with have well formed scheelites, cleaner (I think) form and a generous coating of the powdery yellow-green stolzite that makes them so eye catching.

This was the best of the larger  examples I returned with-- there are a number of well exposed (as opposed to hidden in the quartz) crystals, and they are centrally positioned on their matrix.  They are even accompanied by a Japan Law twin.  In 5 trips to Peru, I was only able to get an example of this material once before-- I was quite happy to have been there at a time close enough to a find to be able to get some.

PAS08 Quartz, Stolzite on Scheelite
Mundo Nuevo Mine, Mundo Nuevo, Sanchez Carrion Prov., La Libertad Dept., Peru
8.3x 5.8x 7.3 cm
$680

A very rich specimen of stolzite dusted scheelite, on quartz.  This is actually one of the better pieces from the group, but because the scheelites are nestled in among the quartz crystals, it is very difficult to focus the camera properly.

The quartz crystals are very transparent, and the bright yellow green color of the stozite dusted scheelites makes them quite visually striking.

I had seen a small group of these at Tucson 2015, and was hoping to get more on my last trip to Peru.

PAS09 Quartz, Stolzite on Scheelite

This specimen is one of my favorite of the miniature sized pieces.  This one has an stolzite-dusted scheelite octahedron perched on the end of a couple quartz crystals. I had seen a small group of these at Tucson 2015, and was hoping to get more on my last trip to Peru.  Although the find was small,  I was able to come back with a group of pretty good pieces.

5.7x 3.1x 4.2 cm
$465

This specimen is one of my favorite of the miniature sized pieces.  This one has an stolzite-dusted scheelite octahedron perched on the end of a couple quartz crystals.   The scheelite crystal on this specimen is exceptionally well positioned/ exposed, and the piece is especially well balanced by the standards of the find.

PAS11 Autunite
Nanjingqiao U deposit, Pingjiang Co., Yueyang Prefecture, Hunan Province, China
4.8x 2.7x 1.8 cm
$465

An unusual novelty from China--autunite, and good ones at that.  In terms of crystallization, these are every bit as good as the examples from Washington or France.

I think they are a bit more UV reactive though-- the color you see int he pictures is half way between what you see under an incandescent bulb (fairly dull) and in natural sunlight (much brighter.)

This has been stabilized.

PAS12 Autunite
Nanjingqiao U deposit, Pingjiang Co., Yueyang Prefecture, Hunan Province, China
10.4x 5.2x 3.1 cm
$650

An unusual novelty from China--autunite, and good ones at that.  In terms of crystallization, these are every bit as good as the examples from Washington or France.  This one has some scuffing and appears to have grown in a seam, so positioning it vertically seems to be the way to display this one.

PAS13 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
18.3x 12.2x 6.2 cm
$1500

A large cabinet sized plate of pyrite with an exceptional mirror luster, from a pocket collected towards the end of 2015.   There is a bit of associated chalcopyrite on the top. Not entirely perfect, but the piece is as shown.  Contacted on the reverse.

I also feel the need to emphasize just how incredibly lustrous this thing is-- in one of the pictures, you can even see my face, and i was sitting almost 2 FEET AWAY when I shot the picture.

PAS14 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
8.5x 6.4x 7.3 cm
$680

A nicely isolated octahedral pyrite crystals on a pyrite matrix, from Huanzala.  Pyrite has been known form this locality for decades, and I would consider this to be one of the most (if not the most) prolific mine in the world, in terms of the sheer tonnage of specimens produced.  For the last several years however, very little material of good quality has escaped-- over 5 trips to Peru, only this trip and the first yielded what I would consider to be good pieces from Huanzala, all the (better) pyrites I brought back in between were from Racracancha.

There is one place where the crystal appears to have grown up against another one.  This is most visible in the image directly below the description, on the right side.  There are a couple different angles from which you could display this one.

This was one piece from a medium sized lot that I purchased.  As the person who sold them to me put it-- the group this belonged to was selected from "many tons" of specimens, and judging from what I usually see, I am inclined to believe him.  It is never difficult to buy pyrite in Peru, but finding good pieces is another story entirely-- the combination of "heavy" and "brittle" does not make it easy.

PAS15 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
9.2x 6.7x 6.1 cm
$595

An unusual specimen of pyrite from the recent pocket, with exceptional luster and very sharp crystals.  The main crystal on this piece is a flattened rectangular prism, a bit of an oddity from a mine that usually produces fairly perfect cubes.

The piece does have a small amount of damage, and is best displayed from the front (as shown in the initial pictures) to minimize the appearance of rear contacts.

An exceptionally lustrous specimen of pyrite from a very good pocket found in the later part of 2015.  There is a bit of damage, but the piece is exactly as shown.

The mine has been producing for decades, but the quality that this pocket produced has not been recovered in years.  Part of that is due to the mine being privatized-- whereas blasting used to be in intervals of 5 meters, technological advances mean that the blasts now destroy up to 15 meters at the time.  Also, the new owners have been VERY strict about allowing specimens out.

Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
7.5x 7.3x 6.4 cm
$485

A large and highly listrous pyrite crystal from a spectacular pocket hit towards the end of last year.   The luster on this one is so high, you can actually see an image of my camera reflected off the crystal's surface.

Can only be displayed from one angle, as you can see in the last image, the back/ sides are etched or contacted.

PAS20 Pyrite
Huanzala Mine, Huallanca District, Dos de Mayo Prov., Peru
11.0x 8.6x 5.1 cm
$295

A cabinet sized specimen from a spectacular pocket hit towards the end of last year.  The specimens from this occurence were notable for their exceptional mirror lusters and sharp edges.

This one has some noticeable etching/ contacting (I really can't tell which) on the display surface, so it is pirced considerably more cheaply, making for a showy yet inexpensive example from the pocket.

Nanjingqiao U deposit, Pingjiang Co., Yueyang Prefecture, Hunan Province, China
5.0x 3.9x 1.6 cm
$0

An unusual novelty from China--autunite, and good ones at that.  In terms of crystallization, these are every bit as good as the examples from Washington or France.

I think they are a bit more UV reactive though-- the color you see in t he pictures is half way between what you see under an incandescent bulb (fairly dull) and in natural sunlight (brighter.)

This has been stabilized.
