Two New Mexican Finds!

Two interesting new finds from Mexico: shattuckite and arsendescloizite.

The Milpillas mine has been wowing collectors for years, first with its azurites, then as the years progressed excellent examples of volborthite, malachite, cuprite, and brochantite were also recovered. The latest find from this mine has been shattuckite.  Although the mineral was sometimes present in massive cabbing material such as the rock marketed as Sonora sunrise, this is the first time that actual, properly formed specimens have been recovered.

The second find comes from Ojuela, which continues to produce, albeit with a bit of miner/gang drama these days.  Arsendescloizite was discovered at the Tsumeb Mine, but the best pieces came from a small find at Ojuela in the 1980's.  These example may not have the same color, but are exceptionally rich and represent quite a rare opportunity to obtain the species.

MXSA01 Shattuckite with Aurichalcite
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
25.3x 15.5x 9.8 cm
$1600

While the Milpillas Mine is best known for its spectacular azurite specimens, it has also produced particularly good examples of a number of other species-- native copper, brochantite, volborthite, and cuprite to name a few.  The latest surprise from this mine has been shattuckite.  The last decade has seen a couple good finds of this species, most notably in Namibia and Congo, and now those are joined by these Mexican examples.

This is a particularly large piece-- the main face (pictured at right) is covered in shattuckite balls with interspersed tufts of lighter aurichalcite.  While the balls closer to the surface have some rubs, the many crevices and hugs present on the specimen also provide protection to many others-- and these areas are especially beautiful to look at close up. Ideally this could be trimmed into a more manageable plate, but I kind of liked the brightness and complexity of colors in the oversized matrix.

This is a particularly large piece-- the main face (pictured at right) is covered in shattuckite balls with interspersed tufts of lighter aurichalcite.  This is not a perfect piece-- a number of the balls are sheared-- but this is still an exceptional rich example of the species for the price (think about how much the Namibian ones go for) and the aurichalcite in the matrix makes for a particularly striking appearance.

MXSA04 Austinite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
14.2x 10.1x 6.7 cm
$450

A very good example of rare austinite from a find made a few months ago at the Ojuela Mine.  This one is something of a limonite vug containing a number of yellowish clusters of the mineral.  Some of them have a bit of edge wear, but the piece is exactly as shown, and I particularly liked this one for its size and the central position of the austinite clusters.

MXSA05 Arsendescloizite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
12.0x 9.5x 4.8 cm
$400

One of the interesting finds out of Ojuela in recent months have been these very rich specimens of arsendescloizite, a rare lead, zinc bearing arsenate.  While it was discovered at Tsumeb, the best specimens arguably came from Ojuela in the late 1980's.  It was a small find however, and today (if you can find one) those pieces command prices in the thousands of dollars.  There have been next to none recovered since then. These do not quite have the same saturated green color, but are exceptionally rich examples o the species nonetheless.

This one is a larger sized cabinet specimen, consisting of. number of limonite plates thoroughly coated in botryoidal arsendescloizite.

This is one of the more unusual examples I was able to obtain-- it is actually a plate of mimetite (the yellow crystals are visible on the back) that has been richly overgrown with botryoidal green arsendescloizite.... it kind of looks like someone has thickly smothered wholegrain mustard on it.

MXSA07 Arsendescloizite with Mimetite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
7.2x 4.7x 3.1 cm
$165

A rich example of rare arsendescloizite, with a secondary growth of yellow mimetite over it.

This one consists of a limonite matrix with a rich smattering of  botryoidal arsendescloizite.   This one was a bit different from the others, int hat theres a bit more spacing between the orbs.

MXSA11 Shattuckite
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
4.0x 3.0x 2.7 cm
$125

A nice example of shattuckite from a recent find at the Milpillas Mine-- not entirely perfect (there is some scuffing, this is nearly unavoidable) but the piece is exactly as shown.

MXSA12 Shattuckite, Chrysocolla and Quartz
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
5.1x 4.3x 2.9 cm
$100

A nice example of shattuckite from a recent find at the Milpillas Mine--this one retains the botryoidal form of the shattuckite, but seems to have an overgrowth of lighter colored minerals (aurichalcite and quartz?)

MXSA13 Shattuckite, Chrysocolla and Quartz
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
5.1x 4.0x 2.6 cm
$85

A nice example of shattuckite from a recent find at the Milpillas Mine, with shattuckite on a couple different sides. There is some contacting, but the piece is exactly as shown.

MXSA14 Shattuckite
Milpillas Mine, Cuitaca, Sonora, Mexico
5.0x 4.4x 2.8 cm
$135

A nice example of shattuckite from a recent find at the Milpillas Mine, with good botryoidal form. Not entirely perfect, but the piece is exactly as shown.

MXSA16 Austinite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
3.7x 1.8x 1.3 cm
$100

A great thumbnail-sized example of austinite, from a find made a few months back.  There were hardly any good thumbnails from this find, most tended to be plates of varying sizes.  This one has a contact on the reverse, but excellent form, and I particularly like that there is a bit of matrix sticking out from the bottom.

MXSA17 Arsendescloizite
Mina Ojuela, Mapimi, Durango, Mexico
7.7x 4.4x 4.2 cm
$165

A rich and rather rare sample of green arsendescloizite from a recent find at the Ojuela Mine.  I've repeated the same historical tidbits in the descriptions of all the other pieces, so for this one I'll just say that these things look a lot like someone has smeared whole grain mustard on a rock.
