Andradite var. Demantoid

A selection of specimens from a new find of bright green demantoid garnets. These come form the northern tip of the island, where the story goes, a local fisherman first discovered a few loose crystals in the waters of a mangrove swamp.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In most cases, the color of these specimens is better in person. The color varies strongly with light source--under incandescent lighting they are at their dullest, but light up into brilliant, grass-green jewels when viewed in natural sunlight.

This is less true of 4 or 5 specimens that have been described as having "olive green" crystals, but even those show significant improvement in sunlight.

The only quartz/ demantoid combination that I brought back, and the best of only a few that were available (the rest were broken, thumbnail-size specimens)

The quartz crystals are all either terminated or double terminated, and intersect each other to create a v-shaped cluster with a few bright green demantoids perched on one side. One of the garnets is incomplete, but this remains a unique and beautiful miniature from the find.

A beautiful specimen from a new find made within the last couple months. This small cabinet has numerous bright green demantoid garnets, many of which are quite gemmy.

There was not too much of this material available, and I selected the best of what could be found.

This is my favorite specimen from amongst those that I acquired, with gemmy green demantoid garnets perched on the edge of their matrix. This is an exceptional, damage free miniature from the find.

Another demantoid "toenail", this one notable for the unusual flattened and elongated habit of the garnets.

Once again, the color and geminess are exquisite, though this was one of the only specimens displaying this unusual habit.

I am told that these specimens were recovered from a mangrove swamp near the northern tip of the island, following an initial discovery of loose crystals by a fisherman.
