Rhodochrosite

(and 2 Rhodonites)

Uchucchacua has been producing rhodochrosite since the early 1980's, and has become famous for the variation and quality of specimens recovered.  Over the past few years, however these rhodochrosites have become more difficult to obtain.  The specimens on this page were purchased from the limited stock of one dealer in Tucson, and the remainder were shipped directly from Peru.

***Please note that the color of the rhodochrosite tends to be more reddish than the pictures show--for some reason my camera has a difficult time with these, and many appear to be magenta rather than the more accurate pinkish-red that these Uchucchacua specimens generally have.

UCR00 Rhodochrosite

Uchucchacua Mine, Oyon Province, Lima Dept., Peru.

9.5x 3.8x 5.0 cm

$2000

Simply put, one of the finest Uchucchacua rhodos that I have seen for sale in recent years.  This cabinet specimen is particularly bright--even by the standard of other Uchucchacua rhodos, and has a display surface covered with small pink scalenohedrons, as well as a cluster of larger crystals.

While it is getting very difficult to find good rhodos from this mine, specimens such as this one were always rare.

The color on this one is accurate for normal lighting conditions.

A cabinet specimen boasting several sharp, deeply colored rhodochrosite scalenohedrons to 1.9 cm in length.  Along with the rhodos are many small, colorless fluorites lying flat against a matrix coated with contrasting manganese oxides.

These started coming out of Peru in the 80's, but over the past couple years fewer and fewer have been found.  This was among the best in the possession of one of the Peruvian dealers at this year's Tucson show.

A very large rhodochrosite crystal, that while seemingly incomplete, does not appear to be damaged.  The top has just weathered away, or never formed, leaving a large chunk of VERY bright rhodochrosite that shows good faces, and could be cut or polished in some way or another to yield a spectacular gem stone.
