Fluorite on Stibnite!

Specimens of fluorite on stibnite from a find made last spring!  I posted a small batch about a year ago, and later purchased some uncleaned material that I finally got around to processing. I do think these are quite special, so I’m posting a second page for anyone who may still want one. China is home to the world’s largest antimony deposits, mostly concentrated in Jiangxi— the classic stibnites from Wuning and Xikuangshan hail from that area, though those generally lack particularly aesthetic associations— just barite sometimes, unless they are weathered and have stibiconite or sulfur. These  however, come from a bit further away in China’s southwestern Guizhou province. The fluorite/ stibnite association is quite unusual in the world of minerals, I only know of this being found 3 times previously— once in Thailand, once in Kyrgyzstan (both 80’s and 90’s discoveries) and then at this mine, once around 2002, and again last year.   These have stibnite clusters covered on one side with small, faintly purple fluorites, the light reflects off the underlying stibnites through the fluorites and gives a particularly good sparkle. The backs often have a light dusting of yellowish stibiconite, and clearly show the form of the stibnite. In many cases, the clusters have at least a couple “drill bit” stibnites that show very unusual twisting.  In addition to larger matrix pieces, this update also has a number of miniatures and thumbnails, last time I was mostly only able to get cabinet sized pieces.

CSF01 Fluorite on Stibnite
Banpo Mine, Dushan County, Qiannan, Guizhou, China
9.3x 8.5x 5.5 cm
$1900

A great example of fluorite on stibnite from the Banpo Mine.  This is probably my favorite piece; the main crystal rises perfectly from the cluster of smaller stibnites, and is somewhat larger and chunkier than most from this find.  There are hundreds of small transparent fluorites clinging to both to that crystal and to the many other in the cluster that impart an extra sparkle, along with a dusting of some yellow antimony mineral (stibiconite?) that adds additional contrast.

Although old discoveries of this combination exist from Kyrgyzstan, Thailand and this mine, this unusual combination is not frequently encountered-- the last time this type of material was found at Banpo was around 2002.  And I would argue these are more visually appealing, given the extra bit of color contrast and sparkle.

Banpo Mine, Dushan County, Qiannan, Guizhou, China
19.0x 6.7x 4.2 cm
$1680

A great MATRIX example of fluorite on stibnite from the Banpo Mine.  While maybe 90% of these are just clusters off matrix, this piece has a perfect grouping of fluoirte-covered stibnites still on a contrastng black matrix. There are hundreds of small transparent fluorites clinging to both to the cluster and coating the matrix that impart an extra sparkle, along with a dusting of some yellow antimony mineral (stibiconite?) that adds additional contrast.

7.5x 6.4x 3.4 cm
$500

A great example of fluorite on stibnite from the Banpo Mine.  This piece has a main crystal that rises perfectly from the cluster of smaller stibnites. There are hundreds of small transparent fluorites clinging to both to that crystal and to the many other in the cluster that impart an extra sparkle, along with a dusting of some yellow antimony mineral (stibiconite?) that adds additional contrast. Slight bit of damage, but still stands out because of its visual composition!
