CLU8
Ilvaite
Laxey Mine, South Mountain District, Owyhee Co., Idaho, USA
4.7x
3.5x 1.8 cm
$69
A very nice (and very old) specimen of ilvaite from a
classic American locality. Especially with the finds in Inner
Mongolia (adding to those from Greece and Dal'Negorsk), Ilvaite is more
abundant than ever.
These old American pieces are exceedingly rare
however, and while not possesing the best luster (few examples form this
location do) it has a particularly nice arrangement and overal form.
Cheap for what it is. |

4.8x
4.0x 3.5 cm
$56
A
brownish yellow sphalerite crystal on a quartz matrix. Sphalerite
has been one of the rarities at the mine-- the brighter yellow crystals
typically sell for a lot more, but since this one lacks quite that
color, it will make a nice reference example.

CLU66
Chrysoberyl
(Matrix!)
Tsitondroina,
Fianarantsoa, Madagascar
6.1x
5.4x 5.7 cm
$69
Admittedly
not the flashiest specimens, but certainly interesting. The
Malagasy chrysoberyls you have seen in the past, whether small V-twins
or large sixlings, probably came from the Lac Alaotra locality. These
come from further south atTsitondroina,
near Fianarantsoa.
These
were part of a find made about one and a half years ago. I searched
though a group of over 60 specimens just to select 4, virtually
everything was broken, but I did salvage these.
I
saw some of these in Tucson, many of those were damaged too. Those
were all marked "50% off" from prices that had to be 220% of
retail...

|
CLU68
Columbite
Mahaiza
Area, Vakinankaratra Region, Antananarivo Province, Madagascar
2.7x
2.0x 1.5 cm
$58
An
excellent and very sharp thumbnail of Malagasy columbite, with the
tapered form that is characteristic of the exampels from this
country. This one comes from a dig site-- many Malagasy columbites
are actually found in rivers, the product of being weathered out of
their pegmatites. Those are typically more rounded.
The
locals collect this material to sell as ore—columbite-tantalite is the
famous “coltan” that gets processed to obtain the tantalum and
niobium. The tantalum is necessary to produce components
(particularly capacitors) used in virtually all electronic devices; the
niobium mostly goes into high grade structural steel.

Fluorite
(Pink!)
Huanggang
Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng
Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
2.8x
2.1x 1.8 cm
$68
A
pink fluorite from a recent pocket found at Hunaggang-- it has probably
only been out of the ground for less than a month and a half as of my
posting this page. I included several pieces in the main update
priced considerably higher-- this one has some contacting and more
internal cleaves/flaws, so I figured it would be better to let it go
cheaply. It's a very rare opportunity to obtain a reference example of
this material for well under $100....

Aquamarine
Huanggang
Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng
Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
5.1x
0.6x 0.5 cm
$67
A
reference specimen of aquamarine from the Huanggang mine. These
have been trickling out for the last year or so... they are usually more
expensive. I have still not seen examples offered by any Chinese
dealers at any of the major shows.

CLK36
Fluorite
with Calcite, Lollingite
Huanggang
Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng
Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
4.0x
3.3x 1.8 cm
$58
A
reference specimen of light purple fluorite on a bit of lollingite with
calcite. Be warned: this is very pretty, but its really just
a very attractive fluorite shard. There are some faces, but it's
not complete-- the clean edges cleaves give it the appearance of a
complete (and much more expensive) specimen.

Manganocalcite
on Manganocalcite
Huanggang
Mine, Hexigten Banner (Keshiketeng Co.), Ulanhad League (Chifeng
Prefecture), Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, China
8.6x
7.0x 5.2 cm
$65
An
interesting example of manganocalcite that has overgrown a
manganocalcite rhomb. It is cleaved on the reverse and sawed on
the bottom, but shows exactly as in the pictures. Actually, the
cleavage allows the multi-generational nature of the manganocalcite
growths to be fully appreciated-- see the bottom right image.

of which it is the type locality for a staggering 58 species. For
comparison, Gebhard’s Tsumeb II lists 242 species at Tsumeb (Mindat
gives 264, with 61 type localities.) |

$65
A
rather attractive cluser of freestanding actinolite crystals, from a new
find in Nevada.
This
mineral usually forms dense aggregates of small crystals, or acicular
clusters of very thin crystals. Despite the fact that this is a
reasonably common mineral, it is unusual to see such large, distinct
crystals.

CLA52
Cuprite
Rubtsovskoe
Cu-Zn-Pb deposit, Rudnyi Altai, Altaiskii Krai, Western-Siberian Region,
Russia
2.0x
2.0x 1.9 cm
$38
These
cuprites have been around for the last two years, more or less,
but the prices have been very, very high. I
purchased a few smaller specimens to put here at lower prices.
This is a nice thumbnail of the material, consisting of a single
octahedral crystal. Please note that any red hues you may be seeing
are because of the strong lighting. There is damage, but it's a
decent reference.
While
the price temporarily dipped low enough for me to be able to offer them
cheaply, please note that mining operations will have passed through the
zone where these cuprites occur within the next year, and then they WILL
disappear from the market.

CLA70
Topaz
Jos,
Plateau State, Nigeria
2.0x
1.6x 1.3 cm
$29
A hard to find, colorless and terminated
crystal of Topaz from Nigeria. Nigeria's pegmatites produce a wide
variety of gem minerals, yet the market is tightly controlled by local
gem cartels.
Mining is conducted exclusively for gem
rough, and Nigerian dealers almost never sell on a piece-by-piece basis,
meaning that if you want to buy the one complete crystal in a 1 kg lot,
you would usually have to purchase the entire lot by the gram...
Obviously this makes no sense for a
specimen dealer, so specimens are rarely seen, despite the relative
abundance of Nigerian material and gem shows.

CLE35
Epidote
Ankarafa,
Vohémar District, Sava (Northeastern) Region, Antsiranana Province,
Madagascar
5.8x 3.3x 2.6 cm
$39
Epidote is one of those minerals that turns up in many
places, in many varried habits. Here is an unusual example from
Madagascar.
This is probably a new find, unfortunately most were
either pretty ugly or single crystals. This was the best one I
saw....
An interesting locality piece.... the only others I
have seen were very old.

CLE36
Cavansite
Wagholi,
near Poonah, Maharashtra, India
4.2x
3.1x 2.0 cm
$34
A cluster of blady
cavansite crystals on matrix.
As an
interesting side note, the quarry where cavansite is found is located in
a huge complex containing several very large quarries. Cavansite
and pentagonite have only been found in any appreciable quantity in part
of one of those quarries, even though all are located within
approximately 2 square kilometers of land.

for that matter) pyrite is not something often seen.
An interesting locality piece.

Madan District, Southern Rhodope Mountains, Bulgaria
6.6x
5.3x 3.2 cm
$48
A specimen of melted
